On August 11, 1973, DJ Kool Herc threw a party at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue, an apartment complex in the Bronx, that has been widely credited as one of hip-hop’s formative moments. Today, it was announced that section of the street will be renamed “Hip Hop Boulevard,” as NY1 reports (via Brooklyn Vegan).

NY1 quotes City Councilman Vanessa Gibson, who said the renaming is meant to honor both Herc and the Bronx’s contributions to hip-hop.
