Can Announce New Singles Collection
Can have announced a new compilation called Can — The Singles, a collection of the band’s single releases. It’s out June 16 via Mute/Spoon, available digitally, on CD, and vinyl. The compilation includes their more well-known recordings—songs like “Halleluwah,” “Vitamin C,” and “I Want More”—along with more obscure releases. The announcement is accompanied by Can’s “Turtles Have Short Legs,” a rare 1971 7” that never appeared on a studio album. It was recorded during the Tago Mago sessions. Along with the new compilation, Can have also announced a new book from Faber & Faber devoted to the band. It’s called All Gates Open, and it’s due out Spring 2018. The special edition will have two volumes: one will be the first authorized biography of the band written by Rob Young and the second, CAN Kiosk by founding member Irmin Schmidt, collects Can visuals and interviews.
On April 8, Members of Can will reunite as “The Can Project” for a special concert at Barbican Hall in London. Irmin Schmidt will be joined by the band’s first singer, Malcolm Mooney, along with the London Symphony Orchestra, Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore and Steve Shelley, and more. Founding drummer Jaki Liebezeit was also scheduled to appear before his death in January. The performance will feature new orchestral works, performed with the LSO, and a supergroup that includes Moore and Shelley. My Bloody Valentine’s Deb Googe will also perform during the concert.
