808 is a forthcoming documentary about the Roland TR-808 drum machine, the influential instrument introduced in 1980 that helped shape the sound of hip-hop, synth pop, and dance music. It has been used by too many artists to name. Case in point: The film features interviews with artists such as Diplo, Pharrell, New Order, Rick Rubin, Questlove, Phil Collins, Damon Albarn, Fatboy Slim, David Guetta, Lil Jon, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, Talking Heads’ Chris Frantz, Goldie, and many more. According to Rolling Stone, 808 will feature an interview with Ikutaro Kakehashi, the founder of Roland, who will explain why the company stopped making the drum machine in 1983. Earlier this year, Roland unveiled plans to release a new version of the 808, a hybrid with its successor, the TR-909.
