David Bowie Art and Furniture Auction Raises $30 Million First Day

The two-day Sotheby’s auction for David Bowie’s art and furniture began yesterday. The pieces, which comprise roughly 65% of Bowie’s collection, fetched £24.3 million ($30.3 million), tripling estimates, the New York Times reports. Watch a Times video from inside the exhibition below. Among the pieces sold was Jean-Michel Basquiat’s “Air Power,” which went for £7.1 million, or $8.8 million. (In the Basquiat biopic, Bowie played Andy Warhol.) Frank Auerbach’s “Head of Gerda Boehm,” estimated at £300,000-£500,00, raised £3.8 million ($4.7 million).
