David Bowie Writes TV Theme Tune for New Crime Drama

Last month, it was revealed that David Bowie would be one of many musicians contributing to a forthcoming SpongeBob Squarepants musical. Today, he’s announced he’s been commissioned to write another original song, this one for new Canal+/Sky Atlantic TV show “The Last Panthers“ (via the Guardian). In a statement issued via Facebook, the collaboration – Bowie’s first piece of music for TV or film since 1993′s the Buddha of Suburbia – is described as “a meeting of minds between Bowie and the director of the series Johan Renck.” The six-part series stars Samantha Morton, John Hurt, and Tahar Rahim (A Prophet).

In the statement, Renck adds:

I was looking for one of the icons of my youth to write the music for the title sequence, but was presented with a God. His first response was precise, engaged and curious. The piece of music he laid before us embodied every aspect of our characters and the series itself – dark, brooding, beautiful and sentimental (in the best possible incarnation of this word). All along, the man inspired and intrigued me and as the process passed, I was overwhelmed with his generosity. I still can’t fathom what actually happened…

“The Last Panthers” will air later this year in the UK and France.
