Dee Dee of Dum Dum Girls Details Kristin Kontrol Solo Project, Shares "X-Communicate"

Kristin Welchez is best known as Dee Dee, the frontwoman of Dum Dum Girls. Today, she’s announced X-Communicate, her debut solo album as Kristin Kontrol. (That’s the cover art above.) Produced by Kurt Feldman and Andrew Miller, with input from Dum Dum Girls producer Richard Gottehrer, the record is out May 27 on Sub Pop. Listen to the title track above.

“For me as leader of Dum Dum Girls it felt very stoic and serious, and I am serious, but anyone who really knows me knows I’m silly, too; I smile a lot,” Kristin said in a press release. “As the years went on, it was so weird that I kept so much of me out of what I was doing creatively.” She added, “The first music I really identified as my own was very poppy, classic 80s, from Debbie Gibson and Tiffany to Janet Jackson and Madonna. I didn’t want to make a record with typical rock vocals.”

The album is also available for pre-order in a “limited, blue-vinyl Loser Edition.

Kristin Kontrol is not Welchez’s only non-Dum Dum endeavor. Before Dum Dum Girls, she was in Grand Ole Party, which released Humanimals in 2008. She also has a band with her husband Brandon, Haunted Hearts. They released Initiation in 2014. Welchez’s last album with Dum Dum Girls was 2014′s Too True.
