Drag City Announces First-Ever Streaming Releases
Independent label Drag City has notoriously kept its releases off of streaming services like Apple Music and Spotify, opting instead to exclusively provide music directly to listeners via outlets like iTunes and Bandcamp. (Although according to REDEF’s Matty Karas, the Drag City catalog did have a stint on the short-lived Urge streaming platform in 2006.) Now, the label have nixed their no-streaming policy: Drag City’s two most recent releases, Bonnie “Prince” Billy’s double-album tribute to Merle Haggard Best Troubadour and Bill MacKay’s Esker are available on Apple Music. Whether future releases from the label or past albums from the back catalog will be made available on streaming platforms remains to be seen—Pitchfork has reached out to Drag City for comment.
