EL VY is the collaborative project of the National‘s Matt Berninger and Menomena/Ramona Falls‘ Brent Knopf. Ahead of their debut record Return to the Moon (out October 30), they’ve shared a new track called “I’m the Man to Be”. You can hear it via Apple Music, or stream below via Spotify.

Update (10:00 a.m.): They’ve also shared a lyric video for “I’m the Man to Be”, which you can watch below. Directed by Tom Berninger (Matt’s brother, and director of National documentary Mistaken for Strangers), it shows Berninger and Knopf goofing off around Venice Beach and Santa Monica.

Bernginger also offered a statement about the song, which he said was inspired by a Schoolboy Q track. “There’s this great Schoolboy Q song ‘There He Go’ which samples Menomena’s ‘Wet and Rusting’,” he said. “I thought it would be funny to re-sample the same sample and do it from the perspective of a pathetic self-aggrandizing rocker alone in a hotel room. Something I know a lot about. That’s how it started but then Brent took the sample out and we wrote an entirely new song.”
