Elusive Jai Paul Surfaces on Miguel's Instagram

Miguel has shared an image of himself and two family members– AK Paul and yes, the Jai Paul– on his Instagram.

The last three years have been met with fervent speculation as to when and how Jai Paul would follow up his two amazing singles, “BTSTU” and “Jasmine”, with an album. What purported to be the XL Recordings artist’s debut album appeared on Bandcamp in 2013, comprising 16 untitled tracks (among them the aforementioned singles and a cover of Jennifer Paige’s “Crush”).

That release was taken down, however, and Jai Paul’s verified account tweeted:

“To confirm: demos on bandcamp were not uploaded by me, this is not my debut album. Please don’t buy. Statement to follow later. Thanks, Jai”

Days later, XL released an official statement that the album leak was in fact illegal, and that what did make it to the internet was not his debut album, but rather “a collection of various unfinished recordings from Jai’s past”. Jai Paul was not responsible for the leak.

While nothing has been confirmed, new material might still be on the horizon. Over the summer producer Rodaidh McDonald confirmed that he was working on new material with Jai Paul:

I did something with him last week, some vocal production on a new song. We finished it, whether he wants to put it out or not I don’t know. It’s just a very long process for him I guess, he’s been working on (his album) for years. One of the things that I sort of identified was that he might benefit from some help using vocals. But his music sounds so good, he doesn’t need any help, I think he’s perfect.

Beyond this statement, there has been little activity from Jai Paul until this photo surfaced. There’s no word yet as to whether or not he and Miguel are collaborating, but stay tuned.

Jai Paul’s “BTSTU” was named on of Pitchfork’s Top 200 Tracks of the Decade So Far (2010-2014).
