Eminem’s “Stan” Added to the Oxford English Dictionary

Eminem’s “Stan” Added to the Oxford English Dictionary

Eminem’s lingo is officially a part of the Oxford English Dictionary. The dictionary includes the word “stan” from Eminem’s song by the same name, off his 2000 album, The Marshall Mathers LP. Oxford defines “stan” as “an overzealous or obsessive fan of a particular celebrity.” In the track, Eminem delivered the first three verses from the title character’s point of view. Stan, an obsessive Slim Shady fan, grew increasingly upset that Slim never responded to his letters, and ended up killing his pregnant girlfriend and himself. The song inspired a new word used heavily on social media to describe a super fan who goes too far in their appreciation.

Eminem recently celebrated the 15th anniversary of The Eminem Show with special bundles featuring a cassette of the album, t-shirts, and autographed posters.
