Erykah Badu Scoring Animated TV Show, Working With D.R.A.M.

Erykah Badu is profiled in the latest issue of The New Yorker. She details some of her upcoming musical collaborations. She opens up about working on the music for the new Comedy Central animated series “Legends of Chamberlain Heights,” airing later this fall. “I had to interview alongside all these other composers,” she says. “Talked all kinds of shit. ‘Deadlines? No problem!’” The profile also walks through a future collaboration with “her favorite young rapper” D.R.A.M. The song, which may be released on his next mixtape, has a Badu verse that was recorded in two takes. “I love this,” she says upon hearing the track. “This kid has my heart.” Update (4/20, 1:42 p.m.): In another new profile with The Fader, Badu has said she has started working on her autobiography. She says she’s painted seven cardboard boxes that will serve as a sort of outline for her life: “I’m gonna line them up on the table, one for each chapter, and I’m gonna drop things in each box so I can have a visual for what I’m doing.” An orange box is for “baby daddies, love affairs,” for example, and a light blue one for her music. “Legends of Chamberlain Heights” is an animated comedy about three high school freshmen from former “Simpsons” artist Brad Ableson, retired UCLA Bruins basketball players, and Bento Box Entertainment, among others, according to Deadline.

Back in October, Badu reached out to D.R.A.M on Twitter after he accused Drake of jacking his song “Cha Cha” for “Hotline Bling.” “we loved Cha Cha first. Very unique and raw. That’s That underground magic force that sparks a seed to grow a tree,” she tweeted. Badu had released her “Hotline Bling” rework “HOTLINE BLING BUT U CAINT USE MY PHONE MIX” earlier that month. Earlier this year, Badu remixed Kanye West‘s “Real Friends” for an upcoming mixtape called THIS $h!t TOO EASY. Read the full New Yorker profile here
