Ford Kills CD Player in New Car, Replaces With Streaming Device

Ford is offering a car without a CD player for the first time in 25 years, NPR reports. Instead of a disc player, the 2018 EcoSport will have an upright touch screen console where passengers can access streaming services through Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. In addition, SiriusXM Radio is available, and there are multiple USB ports and power outlets, as well as a storage bin for devices. Along with the CD removal from the EcoSport, Ford is introducing live TV (via SlingPlayer) to the 2018 Expedition. Both vehicles come with the B&O PLAY Premium Audio System.

With the CD-less EcoSport, Ford is following the footsteps of manufacturers like Toyota and Honda. Beginning with the 2016 models, CD players were not included in the Toyota Scion or Honda Civic. Like the EcoSport, the cars come with a touchscreen that are designed to accommodate streaming.
