Frank Black & the Catholics Announce The Complete Recordings Box Set

Earlier this month, 4AD released a 25th anniversary edition of Pixies’ seminal album Doolittle. Now, frontman Black Francis has announced that one of his other projects, Frank Black & the Catholics, are due for a reissue as well. On March 23, Cooking Vinyl will release Frank Black & the Catholics: The Complete Recordings, a seven-CD collection of remastered versions of the band’s six studio albums, plus a bonus disc. A pre-order on PledgeMusic comes with various bonus items.

The albums included are 1998′s self-titled, 1999′s Pistolero, 2001′s Dog in the Sand, 2002′s Black Letter Days and Devil’s Workshop, and 2003′s Show Me Your Tears. The bonus disc is called True Blue, and contains demos from the sessions for Black Letter Days. That’s the cover art above, based off a portrait of Charlotte Gainsbourg.

In total, the box set will have well over a hundred tracks, but don’t look for them to be arranged chronologically. Instead, Black says the songs will be listed in alphabetic order; “It feels like an approximation of randomness,” he explained in a press release, “and it’s a way to randomise something, especially if it’s titles.” He further argues that through this approach, “we get away from the preciousness of LPs we put out and its more about the body of work, the good times that we had”.
