Gorillaz’s New AR App Requires Access to the Color Magenta

Gorillaz are launching another augmented reality app. Last week, the Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett-created group revealed an AR app that superimposes elements from their recent music videos into the user’s surroundings via the smartphone camera. Now, they’ve joined with Telekom Electronic Beats for The Lenz app, which has a more specific function. With the Lenz, the user can discover hidden Gorillaz content by pointing the camera at anything magenta—shirts, posters, the main photo on this story, dyed poodles, you name it. It’s available for iOS and Android.

Gorillaz’s Lenz app continues their partnership with Telekom, which is hosting the band’s first-ever live interview on its YouTube page. On Thursday, April 20 at 10 a.m. Eastern, Murdoc Niccals and 2D will speak with BBC Radio 1 DJ and host MistaJam, and answer fan questions. Submit questions here.

The band’s new album Humanz is out April 28 (via Polydor). It features Pusha T and Mavis Staples (“Let Me Out”), D.R.A.M. (“Andromeda”), Vince Staples, Benjamin Clementine, Savages’ Jehnny Beth and Noel Gallagher, Popcaan, and many others.
