Ian MacKaye Congratulates Bad Brains on Rock Hall Nomination

Earlier this week, Washington, D.C. hardcore punk pioneers Bad Brains were nominated for induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2017. Fellow D.C. punk legend Ian MacKaye has now expressed his surprise and gratitude at the nomination in an interview with D.C.’s WTOP (via BrooklynVegan). MacKaye, who fronted Fugazi, Minor Threat, and the Evens, and co-founded Dischord Records, said, “I don’t know who the nominators are, and frankly don’t care, but the person who put Bad Brains’ name in the hat is either visionary or they’re savvy and trying to bring some legitimacy to their brand.”

MacKaye called Bad Brains “the greatest band in the world” (during 1979 and ’80), and said that “it would be pretty startling” if the D.C. punks were to be inducted into the Rock Hall. He added, “If the members of the Bad Brains, if this is something they want, I’m happy for them. I know the impact they had on my life, and that of other people.” Read Ian MacKaye’s full WTOP interview here.

In addition to MacKaye, Bad Brains’ own lead vocalist H.R. admitted that the Rock Hall nomination was unexpected. “That was a surprise to me! I never thought people cared enough to make us a Hall of Fame nominee,” he told Billboard. “So, thanks a lot! I’m very honored for this privilege to be on the nominee list.”
