Ian McLagan, the keyboardist in the bands Small Faces and Faces, died today in Austin, Texas following complications from a stroke, NPR reports. He was scheduled to begin a tour today. He was 69.

The Middlesex, England native got his start in music as a member in bands called the Muleskinners and Boz and the Boz People (fronted by Boz Burrell, later of King Crimson and Bad Company). In 1965, he joined Small Faces. When Steve Marriott quit the band in 1969, McLagan, Ronnie Lane, and Kenney Jones joined with Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood to form the Faces.

When Faces split up in 1975, McLagan became a session musician and solo artist. His debut solo album Troublemaker came out in 1979. Throughout his career, he worked with the Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, and many, many others. In 1997, he joined Billy Bragg’s band the Blokes.

McLagan published his memoir All the Rage in 2000 and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012. He released five albums in the past 10 years. His most recent album United States came out in June.

Jones, McLagan’s bandmate in Faces and Small Faces, wrote, “I am completely devastated by this shocking news and I know this goes for Ronnie and Rod also.”
