J Dilla Children’s Book The Life Story of James Dewitt Yancey to Be Published

J Dilla’s mother, Mauren “Ma Dukes” Yancey-Smith, has announced a new children’s book, The Life Story of James Dewitt Yancey. It’s illustrated by Tokio Aoyama, and is out November 22. In addition, there’s an audiobook version, which has narration by Ma Dukes. The Life Story, which centers around Dilla’s early years “is inspired by the stories from his mother, family and siblings.” A portion of the book’s proceeds will go to the James Dewitt Yancey Foundation. Below, see the book cover and cassette, and watch Ma Dukes’ interview on Hot 97 about The Life Story.

Earlier this year, Dilla’s rap album The Diary was released posthumous. In October, Rappcats will release a new 12” vinyl called The Middle Finger, which features two new mixes of tracks from that record: The first track is Kanye West’s version of “The Anthem,” and the second is Dilla’s alternate vocal performance of “Fuck the Police.”
