Jack White has teamed up with T Bone Burnett and Robert Redford for American Epic, a three-part documentary series, a feature film, and a series of recordings. Per a press release, the film, directed by Bernard MacMahon and airing this fall on PBS and BBC Arena, “follows the trail of record company talent scouts from the late 1920s” as they recorded musicians playing early forms of the blues, country, gospel, folk, and other genres. It’ll be accompanied by The American Epic Sessions, a feature length film where modern artists will record using equipment re-created from the documentary. Below, you can watch a trailer for the project.

The American Epic Sessions features performances from White, Beck, Nas, Alabama Shakes, Merle Haggard, Elton John, Taj Mahal, Willie Nelson, Raphael Saadiq, the Avett Brothers, Los Lobos, Bettye LaVette, Steve Martin & Edie Brickell, and many more.

Additionally, music from both movies will be separately released. White’s Third Man Records is also working on a vinyl box set.

The movie is executive produced by White, Burnett, and Redford.
