James Atkins of Hammerbox Has Died

James Atkins, the bassist in Hammerbox and a stalwart of the Seattle music scene, died yesterday of esophageal cancer. He was 49.

In the late 1980s, Hammerbox formed in Seattle, where they amassed a cult following and played shows with Iggy Pop, Joan Jett, L7, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and others. In 1991 they released their self-titled debut album on C/Z, before signing to major label A&M for 1993′s Numb. After being dropped, they split the following year when singer Carrie Aker left to form Goodness. Atkins went on to play in Seattle bands such as Anodyne, which also featured Hammerbox guitarist Harris Thurmond, and Softy.

Hammerbox reunited in 2004, selling out a show at Seattle EMP released in 2005 as a live album. Last December, they reunited again to play a benefit for Atkins after his cancer diagnosis. The Gits (with Rachel Flotard on vocals), Coffin Break, and Alcohol Funnycar also reunited for the show.

Atkins died “surrounded by friends and his favorite music, including AC/DC, Motörhead, Soul Asylum, and The Replacements,” according to a press release. Carrie Akre said, “James deeply loved his rock ‘n roll and adored his Pacific Northwest friends. He moved back over a year ago and to him, he was coming home. We are privileged to have known and played music with him.”
