James Turrell Denies Involvement in Drake's "Hotline Bling" Video

On a few occasions, Drake has expressed his admiration for the artist James Turrell. It’s been hypothesized that the new “Hotline Bling” music video took aesthetic cues from Turrell’s light installations. Now, in a new statement reportedly released by his lawyer (via Noisey), Turrell has clarified that he wasn’t involved in the video’s creation.

“While I am truly flattered to learn that Drake f*cks with me,” writes Turrell, “I nevertheless wish to make clear that neither I nor any of my woes was involved in any way in the making of the ‘Hotline Bling’ video.”

Director X, who was behind the video, denied Turrell’s role as an influence on the video’s style and said that any similarities to Turrell’s work were “not conscious”. He cites his own Sean Paul videos as influences on the artistic direction of “Hotline Bling”.
