Jazz Icon Mose Allison Dead at 89

Mose Allison, the jazz pianist and singer, died this morning of natural causes, JazzTimes reports. He was 89. Allison was born in Tippo, Mississippi. He began taking piano lessons in first grade and was inspired at a young age by blues songs he heard on the local jukebox. He moved to New York City in 1956, and the next year, his first album Back Country Suite was released. He continued recording and performing until he retired in 2012. In 2013, he was named an NEA Jazz Master.
