Jesu/Sun Kil Moon Stream New Record, Rainn Wilson Interviews Mark Kozelek

Justin Broadrick of Jesu and Mark Kozelek of Sun Kil Moon are streaming their collaborative album on Kozelek’s website. The record, which features Rachel Goswell of Slowdive, Low, Isaac Brock, Will Oldham, and more, is being released by Kozelek’s Caldo Verde Records and Rough Trade. As of now, it will be released digitally and on CD on January 22 with a vinyl release to be announced (the album was originally scheduled for February 19). The stream is accompanied by an interview with Kozelek by actor Rainn Wilson, in which they discuss boxing, Modest Mouse, and Kozelek “running out of metaphors.” You can read it here. Kozelek also discussed the influence of David Bowie; read an extract of that below.

My first flight ever, was a trip to see my grandmother during the summer between second and third grade. Back then, you could listen to one song or another on the plane, and I listened to “Young Americans’ about a hundred times on the way to Los Angeles from Ohio. When we got back to Ohio, I begged my mom to buy me that record. It was my first album and it was 4.99. The song ‘Win’ is one of my favorite songs, ever. Guys like Jimmy Page made you want to play guitar, and guys like David Bowie made you want to sing. He got a shout- out on ‘Benji’ and his passing has already made it into some lyrics that I wrote earlier today.

Jesu/Sun Kil Moon includes the previously released track “Exodus,” about the death of Nick Cave’s son, featuring guest vocals by Low’s Mimi Parker and Alan Sparkhark and Rachel Goswell. Kozelek and Wilson performed together in November to celebrate the release of Wilson’s memoir The Bassoon King: My Life in Art, Faith, and Idiocy.
