The Voice Project is a nonprofit group that promotes and defends freedom of expression. Today, the project has launched the “Imprisoned for Art” campaign to advocate for artists across the world who are currently political prisoners due to their creative output. Johnny Depp, Pussy Riot’s Nadya Tolokno, Tom Morello (of Rage Against the Machine and Prophets of Rage), Peter Gabriel, Alex Ebert (of Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros), and Ana Tijoux are all taking part in the Voice Project’s campaign.

For “Imprisoned for Art,” each artist has been paired with a real imprisoned counterpart. In a photo, they hold up a prison board with their counterpart’s sentencing date and length. For example, Depp pays tribute to Ukrainian filmmaker Oleg Sentsov, who is currently serving a 20-year sentence in Russia. All the images are available on t-shirts, in collaboration with Represent, and all proceeds will benefit advocacy efforts. Find the shirts here, and see an image of the artists next to their respective counterparts below.
