Kanye West Honored With Special Achievement Webby Award

Each year, the Webby Awards honors excellence on the internet. This year’s ceremony takes place on May 16, and during this year’s show, Kanye West will be honored with a Webby Special Achievement Award for his “contributions to internet culture.” Kanye is being honored for The Life of Pablo reaching No. 1 on the Billboard charts in a streaming milestone. (It was the first album to reach the top of the charts from over 50% streaming units.) In a statement, Webby Awards executive director David-Michel Davies said that Kanye has “leveraged the immense influence and addictive elements of streaming media to drive innovation on the Internet.” Previous recipients include David Bowie, Prince, Beastie Boys, LCD Soundsystem, Björk, Gorillaz, Trent Reznor, Frank Ocean, Grimes, David Byrne, and De La Soul.

Pitchfork was nominated for two Webby Awards this year.
