Karen Elson Enlists Father John Misty, Black Keys’ Patrick Carney for New Album

Karen Elson has announced her latest album—the follow-up to 2010’s The Ghost Who Walks, which was produced by her then husband Jack White. Double Roses is out April 7 via H.O.T Records Ltd in the U.S. and 1965 Records everywhere else. The album features collaborations with Father John Misty, the Black Keys’ Patrick Carney (who co-produced two tracks on the album), Laura Marling, Wilco’s Pat Sansone, Bright Eyes’ Nate Wolcott, Dhani Harrison, and Paul Cartwright. The album was produced by Jonathan Wilson (Father John Misty, Conor Oberst) and named for a Sam Shepard poem. In a statement, Elson described writing and recording the emotional album after a lengthy hiatus from music. “I wrote maybe six songs but I’m very instinctual as a person and I knew that there was one puzzle piece missing that I hadn’t tapped into the deepest part myself,” she said. “I knew I needed to pull that out if I was going to make the record I needed to make. At the end of the writing the album I felt liberated. I felt free. I felt like me.”

Traditionally, when Patrick Carney and Jack White have both mentioned in news stories, it’s been because of the two rock stars’ very public feud. However, as Elson noted on Twitter, “These people are friends end of story.”
