Krist Novoselic Responds to Buzz Osborne’s Montage of Heck Criticism

Last year, Melvins frontman Buzz Osborne declared Brett Morgen’s recent documentary Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck to be “total bullshit” and “mostly misguided fiction.” (He later stood by the comments.) Today, Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic replied to Osborne’s comments in an interview with Rolling Stone. “That’s just Buzz,” he said. “He’s always been like that, but we love him so we just accept him for that. He’s always had these opinions. Like, ‘Oh, there goes Buzz again.’ You never know what he’s gonna say, but he means well, and he’s a great musician. He’s been a dear friend for a long time. That’s the way it is.”

Novoselic appears frequently in Montage of Heck, both as a talking head and in archival footage. He also appears on Melvins’ upcoming album, Basses Loaded, playing bass and accordion on a song called “Maybe I Am Amused.” Dave Grohl was also slated to record with Melvins, but according to Osborne, he “blew it off.” Basses Loaded is out June 3, and also features contributions from Butthole Surfers’ JD Pinkus, Big Business’ Jared Warren, Mr. Bungle/Fantômas’ Trevor Dunn, and Redd Kross’ Steve McDonald.
