Lou Reed Tribute Curated by Laurie Anderson Announced for NYC’s Lincoln Center
Every summer, New York City’s Lincoln Center hosts the Out of Doors Festival, an annual series of concerts, panels, dances, and other events. In advance of the full lineup announcement on May 4, festival organizers have announced “The Bells,” a daylong celebration in honor of Lou Reed. (The event is named for the title track from Reed’s 1979 album.) It’s slated to take place July 30 in association with the festival. Curated by Reed’s widow Laurie Anderson and his longtime producer Hal Willner, the program will feature live music, screenings of Reed-related films and documentaries, lyric readings by artists and actors, an all-day broadcast of his music, and more. The full roster and complete schedule of the tribute celebration has yet to be announced, but a press release outlines several highlights.
Before the celebration gets underway, Reed’s teacher Master Ren Guangyi will lead a group tai chi class outside the Lincoln Center. Attendees will also be able to experience Anderson’s sound installation Lou Reed: Drones, a three-hour, feedback-based composition crafted from Reed’s guitars and amps. Later in the evening, Anderson and Willner will throw a guest-packed tribute show in nearby Damrosch Park, followed by a screening of Julian Schnabel’s 2008 documentary Berlin: Live at St. Ann’s Warehouse.
Lincoln Center was an important space for Reed and Anderson. As a press release explains, the couple frequently attended performances at the noteworthy venue, which also hosted the only public memorial following the visionary’s death in 2013.
