Lou Reed Tribute to Feature ANOHNI, Willem Dafoe, Mark Kozelek, Sonic Youth Members, More

On July 30, New York City’s Lincoln Center will host “The Bells,” a daylong celebration in honor of Lou Reed. (The event is named for the title track from Reed’s 1979 album.) The event is curated by Reed’s widow, the artist Laurie Anderson, and his longtime producer Hal Wilner. Today, the performers and schedule for the event was detailed in full, as The Guardian reports. A performance of Reed’s love songs will feature ANOHNI, Anderson, Mark Kozelek, John Zorn, Garland Jeffreys, Bill Laswell, and more. A band composed of Sonic Youth’s Lee Ranaldo and Steve Shelley, and fronted by New York Dolls’ David Johansen, Lenny Kaye, Jon Spencer, and more, will do a rock set.

In particular, ANOHNI and Anderson will perform “Doin’ the Things That We Want To” and the Velvet Underground’s “Sunday Morning.” Anderson will also do “Junior Dad,” from Reed’s Metallica collaboration, by herself. Julian Schnabel, Willem Dafoe, Steve Buscemi, and Elizabeth Ashley will do a reading of Reed’s lyrics. A “dronescape installation” inspired by Reed’s noisier work will run for five hours, and Reed’s tai chi master will lead a demonstration. Film screenings will also run throughout the day. Admission is free.
