M.I.A. Details New Album A.I.M.

M.I.A.’s Matangi follow-up—an album she has called her “last LP”—has been detailed at last. A.I.M., out September 9, features previously shared tracks “Borders,” “Go Off,” “Foreign Friend,” and “Bird Song.” Skrillex, Blaqstarr, ADP, and M.I.A. herself are listed as producers. A deluxe version features five additional tracks, including Diplo’s version of “Bird Song,” which M.I.A. said Interscope didn’t clear. Find the full tracklist below.

The title of one song, “Fly Pirate,” appears to call back to the controversy surrounding her “Borders” video. In the clip, she wore a jersey with sponsor Fly Emirates’ logo altered to read “Fly Pirates.” Paris Saint-Germain F.C. reportedly sent her a letter demanding that she take the video down.

Her new album appears to follow in the tradition of album titles that reference her and her family’s names. Arular was named for her father and Kala for her mother. M/|Y/| and Matangi were both references to her own name.

No stranger to controversy, M.I.A. made it sounds like she was tempted to pre-empt the album’s official release. After hinting that she was “on the verge” of leaking the album, however, she announced a firm release date. M.I.A. was also recently dropped from Afropunk London. She slammed the MTV VMAs after “Borders” was snubbed, accusing the award show “racism sexism classism elitism.”
