Macklemore and Ryan Lewis Did Not Submit Their Album to the Grammys

Macklemore and Ryan Lewis did not submit their 2016 album This Unruly Mess I’ve Made for consideration for any Grammy nominations this year, the AP reports. It is not yet clear why the duo chose not to make the record eligible. Pitchfork has reached out to their representatives, as well as Grammy reps, who could not confirm the report.

Macklemore and Ryan Lewis took home four awards at the 2014 Grammys (tying Daft Punk for most that night). Their debut, The Heist, won Best Rap Album, beating records by Kendrick Lamar, Kanye West, Jay Z, and Drake. After the show, Macklemore personally texted Kendrick to apologize; he then posted that apology text on his Instagram. In response, Kendrick said Macklemore’s win was “well deserved,” and that he “is a genuine dude.” Others, notably Drake, criticized Macklemore’s move.

Frank Ocean also did not submit his albums Blonde and Endless for Grammy nominations this year. In a rare interview, he explained that he withheld them because he thinks “the infrastructure of the awarding system and the nomination system and screening system is dated.”
