Malcolm McLaren and Vivienne Westwood’s Son Burns “Anarchy in the U.K.” Acetate: Watch

Back in March, Joe Corré, the son of punk icons Malcolm McLaren and Vivienne Westwood, announced plans to burn his collection of punk memorabilia, apparently worth £5 million (now roughly $6.2 million). Now, Corré has made his first move by setting alight an acetate of Sex Pistols’ “Anarchy in the U.K.,” as Dazed points out. Corré originally listed the acetate on eBay for charity, Dazed reports, but when bidding stalled at £65,000—short of its reserve price—he elected to go ahead with the burning. Watch video below.

The remainder of the items are due to be set ablaze in London this Saturday, on the 40th anniversary of “Anarchy in the U.K.” Corré’s father McLaren managed the Sex Pistols and is widely credited with organizing them into existence.

One of Corré’s major gripes is with Punk London, a series of London events celebrating punk’s 40th anniversary this year. It’s sponsored by British institutions such as the BFI, the British Library, and the Museum of London. “The Queen giving 2016, the Year of Punk, her official blessing is the most frightening thing I’ve ever heard,” Corré said in the March press release. “Talk about alternative and punk culture being appropriated by the mainstream. Rather than a movement for change, punk has become like a fucking museum piece or a tribute act.”

Addressing criticism in an interview with Dazed, Corré said he’d received letters from people asking him not to burn the memorabilia, and to donate it or sell it for charity instead. His reply then: “Bollocks! It’s my stuff, I can burn it if I want to, and I think it’s probably the best thing to do with it.”
