Marvin Gaye What’s Going On Documentary Announced

For the first time, Marvin Gaye’s family has approved a documentary about the late legend. Noah Media Group and Greenlight are currently developing a film called Marvin, What’s Going On? about the making of the singer’s iconic 1971 albumVariety reports. Gaye’s children Nona, Marvin III, and Frankie Gaye, as well as his former wife Janis Gaye “have supported and contributed to” the doc, which is scheduled to go into production this year and see release in 2017. Gabriel Clarke and Torquil Jones will co-direct the movie, which will be filmed on location in Detroit, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C. The documentary will include “exclusive interviews with some of Motown’s top stars and never-before-seen archive footage unearthed by Gaye’s children and former wife.” 

The film’s producers said in a statement that Marvin, What’s Going On? will be “the defining portrait of this visionary artist and his impeccable album.” They added that “the relevance of [his] masterpiece…is as strong as ever.” In a joint statement, Gaye’s children said, “We look forward to participating and sharing what we can through friends, family, photos, footage and priceless stories that only those who knew our father up close and personal would know, as well as his contemporaries, purists and fans who have studied him and his art over decades.”
