Melvins Recruit Krist Novoselic for New Album, Blast Dave Grohl for Blowing Them Off

Melvins have announced their latest album, Basses Loaded: a 12-track LP out June 3 via Ipecac. True to its name, the record features six different bass players, including Nirvana’s Krist Novoselic, Butthole Surfers’ JD Pinkus, Big Business’ Jared Warren, Mr. Bungle/Fantômas’ Trevor Dunn, and Redd Kross’ Steve McDonald. (Melvins drummer Dale Crover performs bass on four tracks as well, including on a cover of “Take Me Out to the Ball Game.”) Below, check out the album artwork and tracklisting, plus “Hideous Woman,” a collaboration with McDonald (via Rolling Stone). Also below, find the group’s extensive tour itinerary.

Speaking about the album with Rolling Stone, Melvins frontman Buzz Osborne talked about how the Novoselic track came about:

That was a really, really funny story. It was before where [the surviving members of Nirvana] played with Paul McCartney. Dave Grohl had said that he wanted to do all that stuff with us. He wanted to do Nirvana songs with the Melvins, and maybe have David Yow singing. So Krist Novoselic came down and we started rehearsing, and Dave was supposed to show up — and he just never showed up. Blew it off, totally. And it was his idea! I didn’t appreciate that, you know? I’m a lot of things, but one thing I’m not doing is sitting next to the phone in curlers, waiting for Dave Grohl to call me, you know? When he totally blows you off like that, it’s fucked. But whatever. There’s nothing I can do about that. So we did some recording with Krist while he was here.

Osborne added:

I don’t do that to people, you know? Generally when I come up with an idea for something and it’s my idea, and people fly down there on their own dime, which is what Krist did, and then you leave him hanging. That’s not something I’m known for. But Dave, he’s busy playing songs at the Oscars and shit

Osborne also addressed the reaction to disparaging comments about the Kurt Cobain documentary Montage of Heck he made last June, in which he lambasted the film as “90% total bullshit” and “mostly misguided fiction.” He continues to stand by his statements, telling Rolling Stone, “When you’re going to sit there and talk about a guy that I knew back then, and you’re going to say that kind of stuff, you better be able to back it up. And I’m telling you right now, that that’s a bunch of bullshit.”

Basses Loaded isn’t the only new Melvins release on the horizon: earlier this year, the group announced the long-awaited release of Three Men and a Baby, their collaboration with Mike Kunka of godheadSilo. That album’s out April 1 via Sub Pop.
