Missouri State Senator Reads From 50 Cent's Self-Help Book During Filibuster

Yesterday, the Missouri Senate sidelined a vote on a sales tax plan. 50 Cent proved an inadvertent ally in Democratic Senator Maria Chappelle-Nadal’s efforts to keep the legislation from moving forward, as the Associated Press reports. The politician successfully filibustered the legislation yesterday with the help of Curtis Jackson’s 2009 book The 50th Law. Chappelle-Nadal took the Senate floor for nearly an hour to read from 50′s autobiographical self-help guide, which he co-wrote with Robert Greene (author of The 48 Laws of Power). The text offers a philosophical reflection on the rapper’s life and career, interspersed with wisdom from Abraham Lincoln, Socrates, Malcolm X, and other noteworthy figures. However, the legislative battle remains far from over. The AP reports that the House passed a bill later that day similar to the filibustered legislation.
