N.W.A., Cheap Trick, Chicago, Deep Purple, and Steve Miller Inducted Into Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame‘s class of 2016 has been announced: N.W.A., Cheap Trick, Deep Purple, Chicago, and Steve Miller have been inducted. Longlist nominees Janet Jackson, Nine Inch Nails, the Smiths, the Cars, Chaka Khan, Chic, the JB’s, Los Lobos, the Spinners, and Yes didn’t make the cut this year.
Speaking to Rolling Stone about N.W.A.’s induction, Ice Cube said:
It’s hard to sum up exactly what it means. It means a lot of things. It means that the group’s mark is kind of solidified. It’s all legitimized in a way because the whole music industry has to honor the group in a way … It’s everything that kind of eluded us in a lot of ways when we were coming up. So many people were opinionated about N.W.A. I think everyone now at this point, no matter how you feel about us, understands what the group actually did and what it means to modern music.
Asked if Eazy-E would be pleased, he said:
I think he’d be real excited because he was always fighting for legitimacy, whether it was trying to get out of the dope gang and become a legitimate, productive person in society. Also, the industry talked a lot of shit. This would please him I think because the music that we did is a force to be reckoned with. We got some of the most creative, talented people in N.W.A that’s ever been compiled in one group. It’s just exciting that the group as a whole gets recognized by the whole industry as Hall of Fame-worthy.
On whether the group would perform at the ceremony, Cube added, “I think we can get Ren, Yella and Dre together. I think Snoop might do an honorary Eazy. I can’t speak for him, but we’ll ask him. We’ll probably ask a few people.”
Lou Reed, Green Day, Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Bill Withers, and the Paul Butterfield Blues Band were inducted last year.
The induction ceremony will take place at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center on April 8. It will be open to the public; tickets go on sale in February. The event will air on HBO in Spring.
In order to be eligible for induction, artists need to have released their first single or album 25 years ago (no later than 1990).
