Neil Young Re-releasing 1982 Film Human Highway, Announces Bridge School Benefit Lineup

In 1982, Neil Young released a film that he co-directed, co-wrote, and starred in. Human Highway is a weird one, to say the least—an apocalyptic comedy that also features Devo, Dennis Hopper, Russ Tamblyn, Dean Stockwell, Sally Kirkland, and others. The film, which includes several songs from his synth-centric album Trans, got premiered at the Mill Valley Film Festival in 1982 before getting released on VHS and LaserDisc in the ’90s.

After screening at the Toronto International Film Festival alongside a talk from Young, the film is getting re-released, Billboard reports. The newly restored and recut Human Highway will open at New York’s Film Forum in January and then get a wide release. Watch the new trailer below.

The film was largely self-funded by Young. “It was ridiculous to explain it and we had no script that we could point to to say, ‘This is worth hundreds and thousands of dollars,’ so finally we just made it, just rented the place for a month or so,” Young told the TIFF crowd. The lineup for Young’s annual Bridge School Benefit, which will take place from October 25-26 at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, has also been announced. Young, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Florence + the Machine, Tom Jones, Band of Horses, Norah Jones, and Pegi Young are all scheduled to play. Find full details here.

It’s the first concert to feature both Neil and Pegi Young since it was reported last month that the couple had filed for divorce. The Youngs co-founded the Bridge School in 1986.
