Neutral Milk Hotel’s Julian Koster Starts Podcast ft. Tim Robbins, Mandy Patinkin
Julian Koster of the Music Tapes and Neutral Milk Hotel has a new endeavor—a podcast called “The Orbiting Human Circus (of the Air),” SPIN reports. It’s part of the Night Vale Presents network—the team behind the popular fictional radio show “Welcome to Night Vale.” According to a press release, Koster’s show tells “the story of a mysteriously impossible variety show broadcast from the ballroom at the top of the Eiffel Tower, and the janitor who longs to become a part of it.” It’s set to feature appearances by Tim Robbins, Mandy Patinkin, Charlie Day, John Cameron Mitchell, and others. Koster said of the podcast in a statement:
“When I was growing up, I loved records because you could lose yourself in them. They could become a friend, a part of your life. You could listen to them over and over—and you’d be rewarded by discovering something new. Podcasting, to me, feels like it can be such an exciting new incarnation of that feeling.”
The first season of “The Orbiting Human Circus (of the Air)” will premiere October 12. New episodes will be released biweekly through February. Koster has also announced a series of live performances, which will feature both new Music Tapes songs and stories for the podcast. The press release also promises “mystifying performing musical bird, a trombone-playing polar bear, and legitimate feats of time travel.”
The circus seems to be something of a theme for Koster. In 2012, he sold his In the Aeroplane Over the Sea banjo to fund a circus tent tour.
