Nico Biopic Announced

Nico–the artist perhaps best known for her work with the Velvet Underground and Andy Warhol–will be the subject of an upcoming biopic, Variety reports. Directed by Susanna Nicchiarelli, Nico, 1988 will begin shooting in Italy on November 7. The film will star Trine Dyrholm as Nico, and focus on the artist’s later years, beginning in 1987–a year before her death. In the film, Dyrholm will perform Nico’s original songs in flashback sequences. In a statement to prospective film buyers, Nicchiarelli said her performances “will tell us more than any other dialogue or situation in the film.”

Also in the statement, Nicchiarelli said:

Most people think, as Andy Warhol once said, that after her experience with Velvet Underground and the Factory—and after having had sex with most of the rock stars of those years—Nico simply “became a fat junkie” and disappeared… But is this how her life really went?
