FM radio broadcasting is coming to an end in Norway, the New York Times reports. The switch-off, which is the first of its kind, began in the country’s north yesterday, with a county-by-county elimination to follow throughout the year. Oslo will go digital-only in September, and the changeover—which an official described as “part of the modernization of Norway”—will be complete on December 13. Digital radio sales have shot up since 2011, when the government voted to make the switch. The country’s Culture Ministry estimated the process would save about $25 million a year, according to the Times.
