Oakland Artist Joey Casio Confirmed Dead in Ghost Ship Fire

Joseph Matlock, an artist and producer who recorded and performed under the name Joey Casio, has been confirmed to be one of the victims of the Oakland warehouse fire that claimed the lives of 36 people on Friday, December 2. He was 36 years old, as the Associated Press points out. In a quote, K Records label head Calvin Johnson called Matlock “the gentlest of people.” The label is selling a Joey Casio singles bundle in honor of Matlock, with all proceeds going towards the Ghost Ship Fire Relief Fund.

Them Are Us Too’s Cash Askew also died in the deadly fire, as did 100% Silk artists Nackt and Cherushii. In the wake of the tragedy, Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf has announced a $1.7 million investment in “sustainable, long-term solutions to creating affordable, safe spaces for Oakland’s artists and arts organizations.” The Oakland Athletics have created a fundraiser in support of the victims of the fire; find that here
