Other Music, Beloved NYC Record Store, to Close

Other Music, the beloved Manhattan record store, has announced that it is closing down. The last day of operation will be June 25. Other Music has been one of the city’s premier record shops since opening at 15 E. 4th St. in December 1995. It employed members of bands like Animal Collective, Widowspeak, Nude Beach, Anti-Pop Consortium, and many more. It also hosted in-store performances from Neutral Milk Hotel, Elliott Smith, the National, St. Vincent, Yo La Tengo, Vampire Weekend, DJ Shadow, Mac DeMarco, and many more artists over the years.

In 2012, the store launched a label, Other Music Recordings, in a partnership with Fat Possum. The label will continue to operate.

“Other Music is proud to have worked directly with so many talented and visionary artists and labels, and more than anything, for the passionate and thoughtful customers who walked through its doors every day for twenty years,” a press release stated. “The shop has sold millions of records, won awards and accolades, and hopefully touched more than a few lives. Times change. This business has changed, this city has changed, but records will keep spinning, and they ask only one thing—that you keep supporting great music, wherever and however you can.”
