Play the Smiths and PETA’s “Meat Is Murder” Video Game

The Smiths have gone 8-bit. The band have collaborated with PETA and This Is Pop for a new online video game called “The Beautiful Creature Must Die.” In the game, which is based on the band’s 1985 song “Meat Is Murder,” players must save chickens, cows, pigs, and turkeys from slaughter, as they fall down the screen toward bloody blades. An arcade-style instrumental of “Meat Is Murder” is looped as you play.

In a press release, Morrissey said, “This game is the biggest social crusade of all, as we safeguard the weak and helpless from violent human aggression. You don’t get that from ‘Pokémon Go.’” Play it below. In addition to “The Beautiful Creature Must Die,” the Smiths also lent their song to a new PETA video about the meat industry. Scroll down for the video.

Morrissey has long been outspoken about veganism. In 2013, he famously called for Los Angeles’ Staples Center to shut down its meat vendors for his concert. The venue did not comply fully, but the McDonald’s outlets were closed for his show. Earlier this year, he criticized the Buzzcocks for allowing their song to be used in a McDonald’s ad.
