Preview Sufjan’s Original Score for New Ballet The Decalogue

Justin Peck—resident choreographer at the New York City Ballet—will premiere a new ballet at this year’s Here/Now Festival, as part of NYCB’s 2017 spring season. It’s called The Decalogue, and it features a new original score by Sufjan Stevens. The premiere takes place on May 12, with additional performances on May 14, 18, and 20 EVE. Below, watch a new clip about The Decalogue. In addition to the music (for piano), Stevens did the motion graphics for the Rebekka Björnsdóttir and Yoonha Park-directed video.

The Decalogue marks the second time Peck has commissioned Stevens. Previously, Stevens composed score for 2014’s Everywhere We Go. Peck also set his 2012 ballet Year of the Rabbit to a version of Stevens’ 2001 record Enjoy Your Rabbit. Both of those pieces will be performed at the Here/Now Festival next month.

Stevens has two new projects on the way: Planetarium (with the National’s Bryce DessnerNico Muhly, and James McAlister) and Carrie & Lowell Live. Read “Tracking Sufjan Stevens’ Fascination with Outer Space” on the Pitch.

Correction: An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated Justin Peck commissioned three works from Sufjan Stevens. He has commissioned two works from Stevens.
