Prince Autopsy Completed, But Test Results May Take Weeks

Prince Rogers Nelson, the legend known as Prince, was found dead on Thursday at his Paisley Park estate in Chanhassen, Minnesota. He was 57. An autopsy was completed at 1 p.m. local time  today, but determining the cause of Prince’s death could take days or weeks, according to the Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office in Ramsey, Minnesota. On Twitter, the medical examiner’s office said Prince’s body has been released to his family. (Martha Weaver, a spokesperson for the office, confirmed the authenticity of the Twitter account.) No details will be made public about the autopsy until the office completes a full exam, including gathering information about Prince’s medical and family history, according to a press release. “Gathering the results will take several days and the results of a full toxicology scan could likely take weeks,” the office said.

The Carver County Sheriff’s Office was set to hold a press conference about its investigation into Prince’s death at 3 p.m. local time. Update (4:15 p.m.): Sheriff Jim Olson said in the press conference that there were “no obvious signs of trauma” and “we have no reason to believe this was a suicide.” On Thursday, the sheriff’s office said Prince was found in an an elevator and pronounced dead at 10:07 a.m.

Last week, a plane taking Prince home from Atlanta was forced to make an emergency landing so Prince could go to the hospital.
