Prince Sold More Albums Than Anyone Else in 2016

In 2016, Prince sold more albums than any other artist, Billboard reports. Throughout the year, he sold a total of 2.23 million albums, beating out Adele, who sold 2.21 million. Prince’s best-selling albums were the the 2001 compilation The Very Best of Prince and 1984’s Purple Rain, which sold 668,000 and 498,000 copies, respectively. (In the week following Prince’s death, those two albums topped the charts.) The majority of Prince’s sales last year occurred in the month after his death, selling 5.65 million songs and albums between April 21 and May 19. Since his death, Prince’s songs and albums have sold a combined 7.7 million copies, with 2.3 million coming from physical sales and 5.4 million from downloads.

A deluxe reissue of Purple Rain featuring previously unreleased material is due out later this year. Read “Prince Was a Queen-Maker” on the Pitch.
