Radiohead Fan Uncovers Song on Master Tape From A Moon Shaped Pool Deluxe Edition

Radiohead fans who purchased the special deluxe edition of their latest album A Moon Shaped Pool also received a piece of 1/2” recording tape from the band’s various recording sessions from throughout the years, dating all the way back to Kid A. “The tape degrades over time and becomes unplayable,” the band said in the product description. “We thought rather than it ending up as landfill we would cut it up and make it useful as a part of the special edition. A new life for some obsolete technology. You may have silence, you may have coloured leader tape, you may have a chorus… It’s a crapshoot.”

One fan from Texas, Matt Blackwell, took his bit of tape to a mastering studio to discover what exactly he got. The engineer carefully spools the tape into a machine to digitally transfer the audio—the resultant snippet lasts about 3/4 of a second. Watch it happen below.

Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich saw the video and said, “It’s ‘Bodysnatchers!’” Thom Yorke retweeted Godrich’s declaration, too. But according to some diehard sleuths on the Radiohead Reddit forum, they believe Blackwell actually has a snippet from a different In Rainbows cut: “Jigsaw Falling Into Place.” (Godrich says he later watched it again and agreed that it was “Jigsaw”—“was listening on my phone before… doh.”)  Below, compare Blackwell’s audio (on repeat) with the snippet in question from “Jigsaw” (courtesy of Reddit user HusKing).

@MattBlackwell4 my mistake! It is jigsaw – it’s the fill after ‘come back in focus again’ – was listening on my phone before.. doh.
