Raffi “Strongly Objects” to New Pornographers’ Name, A.C. Newman Trolls Raffi

Beloved children’s musician Raffi Cavoukian has taken a firm stance against the New Pornographers’ band name (as Exclaim! notes). He tweeted today, “strongly object to that name. as bad as ‘food p**n’ etc.,” adding that it’s “not a word to normalize in public conversation. consider youngsters, etc.” (He set the asterisk precedent back in 2015 when he wrote, “i don’t RT anything with ‘p**n’ in source name.”) After A.C. Newman saw Raffi’s tweet, he said, “TFW someone whose music you loved as a child says mean things about your life’s work.” Newman then clarified that he’s “not very familiar” with Raffi’s music and was attempting to “make him feel bad” with his tweets. He continued, however, with tweets joking that his 5-year-old son asked if Raffi is “the man that hates Daddy.” Find all of their tweets below. Pitchfork has reached out to Raffi and the New Pornographers’ respective representatives for comment.

Actually I am not very familiar w/ Raffi’s work. Just sent that tweet to make him feel bad. Always preferred puppet-oriented entertainment.

Considering my childhood love for puppets, I think Raffi + I both agree that ‘Puppetry Of The Penis’ is in bad taste.

Not a feud at all. In fact I think we both agree that “Puppetry Of The Penis” is in bad taste. A shared love of tasteful puppets. https://t.co/KBgWB5PkEK

Playing Raffi for my 5 year old + he says “Is this the man that hates Daddy?” Heartbreaking. “No, he doesn’t hate Daddy” I say, hugging him.

The new pornography was supposed to hold a mirror to a better + changed society, but try explaining that to an apoplectic kids entertainer.

— Carl Newman (@ACNewman) April 18, 2017

.@Raffi_RC, it would mean the world to my son if you could tweet that you don’t hate his Daddy, just my bands name. Silly misunderstanding. https://t.co/nwgxxdH6Ho

“Maybe Raffi can’t tweet to you because he’s playing a concert” I say to my son. A lie but I want to protect him from this cruel world.

— Carl Newman (@ACNewman) April 18, 2017

My son didn’t think our band name meant anything. Now he wants to know if I’m “a bad man”. It breaks me in two. @Raffi_RC

Sometimes I find life very amusing.

— Carl Newman (@ACNewman) April 18, 2017

Have no hard feelings against @Raffi_RC . I just need him to write a tweet to my son saying ‘Aiden, I don’t think your father is a bad man’

— Carl Newman (@ACNewman) April 18, 2017

You can use whatever euphemisms you want but let me say this: it sickens me, @Raffi_RC pic.twitter.com/0ckLxNRjiZ

In @Raffi_RC ‘s defense, ‘Adult Entertainment’ was probably meant ironically but still… kids don’t know that! It was MARKETED to kids!
