Rare Boombox Collection Goes Up for Sale

Rare Boombox Collection Goes Up for Sale

A New Zealand man is selling his personal collection of over 400 vintage boomboxes for $20,000, FACT reports. Craig Kenton began accumulating the sound systems 15 years ago. “Finding them has been a big part of my life. I feel like the collection is a piece of 80s art, and I hope they go somewhere they can be seen,” he told Stuff.co.nz.

Among Kenton’s collection are the JC-2000 (one of the biggest ever made, featuring 10-inch speakers on each of its sides), the Sanyo Big Ben (his favorite, with an eight-inch subwoofer in the middle of it), Sharp models, JVC models, and more. He said over 300 of them function well, and that the 20 most expensive models alone are worth the $20,000 for which he’s asking. Kenton, however, says he “would prefer to sell them as a collection.” See some photos of Kenton’s collection below, and find more details (and bid!) on Trade Me; the auction closes August 1.
