Several Dead in Shooting at BPM Festival in Mexico

Early this morning, a fatal shooting took place at BPM Festival, an electronic dance music event in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. The Associated Press reports that five people were killed and 15 people were injured, according to local police. (In an earlier statement on the BPM Facebook page, organizers confirmed that four people had been killed, “including three members of the BPM security team,” and 12 people were injured.) The attorney general of the state of Quintana Roo “said it was not a terrorist attack,” the AP reports.

The shooting took place during an event at the Blue Parrot club on the closing night of the 10-day festival. According to the event listing on Facebook, artists scheduled to perform included Technasia, Santé, Sidney Charles, De la swing, and George Privatti. The director of police was quoted as saying that the violence stemmed from “a disagreement between people inside” the Blue Parrot and escalated when security staff intervened.

No arrests have been made in the shooting yet.

According to the AP, authorities confirmed that the dead included two Canadians, an Italian, and a Colombian, and the injured included Americans and Canadians.

“We are overcome with grief over this senseless act of violence and we are cooperating fully with local law enforcement and government officials as they continue their investigation,” the statement from BPM read.
