Soundgarden and Audioslave Black Out Social Media in Honor of Chris Cornell

Soundgarden have blacked out their profile pictures on their Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter pages, just over a week after the death of singer Chris Cornell. It is Soundgarden’s first public acknowledgment of his passing. Cornell, who co-founded the band in 1984, died on May 17, shortly after Soundgarden’s concert at the Fox Theatre in Detroit. Audioslave, the supergroup Cornell co-founded in 2001, have also blacked out their Facebook profile photo and cover photo. The band reunited earlier this year for their first performance in over a decade. Temple of the Dog, a group featuring members of Pearl Jam and Soundgarden, have also blacked out their pictures on Facebook.

A wide variety of tributes to Cornell have taken place over the last week. His wife, Vicky Cornell, recently shared an open letter expressing her grief. Norah Jones covered Soundgarden’s “Black Hole Sun” at the Detroit Fox Theatre. Ryan Adams, Slipknot’s Corey Taylor, and Heart’s Ann Wilson have also performed Cornell’s music in his honor. Tom Morello, Cornell’s Audioslave bandmate, wrote a poem in his memory.
